My Journey to AGO Certification

I entered the world of organists as a pianist who didn’t have any idea of the intricate world of the pipe organ. Probably similar to many church pianists, I found myself placed on the organ bench, was shown where a button was to sound the pedals on the lower half of a keyboard, and entered unfamiliar territory. Yes, being a new organist was quite uncomfortable. Mistakes were made. Learning moments abounded.  I quickly discovered there was much I had to learn.

Somehow, I stumbled upon the American Guild of Organists and was thrilled to learn of the group’s educational resources, including the certification options.

The easiest I thought would be to pursue the Service Playing Certification so this became my entry point. Accessing the requirements for this certificate, I got myself special access to my local church where I was able to get quiet practice time one hour before choir rehearsals during the week and from 530 am to 630 am on Sunday mornings.

I was quite an accomplished pianist when I set upon this journey. I wanted to prove to myself that I could make the transition into the organ world.

AGO Certifications Available

The AGO offers a progressive ladder of certification levels, each designed to meet organists at different stages of their career and proficiency. From the service-playing certificate for those at the beginning of their professional journey to the coveted Fellow of the American Guild of Organists (FAGO) designation for the upper echelons of mastery, there’s a pathway for everyone. The comprehensive series of certifications include:

Service Playing Certificate (SPC)

Designed for those providing music in religious services, this certification tests basic skills and knowledge.

I found the Service Playing Certification (SPC) a great entry point to church organ certification. Taking advantage of numerous AGO resources, I learned about registration, choral accompaniment, hymn playing techniques, and so much more.

Colleague of the American Guild of Organists (CAGO)

The Colleague certification is a step up, requiring a demonstration of intermediate-level organ playing and liturgical knowledge.

This exam consists of demonstrating keyboard skills, sight-reading, harmonization, transposition, and modulation. These are all important requirements for the successful church organist

For my examination, I chose to pursue a dual certification in concert with the National Pastoral Musicians.  I found this supplemental exam requirement to be the most challenging part of my CAGO certification.

Associate of the American Guild of Organists (AAGO)

Aimed at advanced organists, the associateship certification level tests a comprehensive set of skills including performance, improvisation, and theoretical knowledge.

Fellow of the American Guild of Organists (FAGO)

The highest level of certification, the fellowship certification requires mastery of organ performance, improvisation, and a deep understanding of organ literature and liturgical practices.

Choir Master Certification (ChM)

The Choir Master Certification is a specialized certification focusing on choral conducting and music preparation.

Preparing for the Exams

Preparing for an AGO certification exam is a journey that demands dedication, practice, and study. Here are some strategies to help candidates navigate this challenging but rewarding path:

Study Materials and Resources: The AGO provides a wealth of resources, including recommended reading, practice materials, and sample exams. Engaging with these materials can provide a solid foundation.

Mentorship and Lessons:Working with a mentor or an experienced organ teacher who understands the AGO certification requirements can provide invaluable guidance and feedback.
Regular Practice: Consistent, focused practice sessions, especially on pieces and techniques required for the exam, are crucial.

Join Study Groups: Connecting with other organists preparing for the same certification can offer support, motivation, and insights into effective study habits.

Pipe Organ Encounters: Young organists will enjoy the Pipe Organ Encounters outreach program sponsored by the AGO. POE programs offer teenagers and adults opportunities to learn more about the pipe organ and its construction. Experienced organists serve as faculty and facilitate visits to hear and play amazing instruments.

Benefits of Certification

Achieving an AGO certification comes with a host of benefits, both tangible and intangible:

Professional Recognition: Certification is a mark of professionalism and expertise, recognized by churches, academic institutions, and music organizations worldwide.

Career Advancement: Many positions, especially in religious institutions, prefer or require AGO-certified organists, opening up more employment opportunities.

Skill Enhancement: The preparation process itself enhances an organist’s skills, knowledge, and understanding of music theory, performance, and liturgical practice.

Networking Opportunities: Being part of the AGO certified community offers networking opportunities, allowing organists to connect with peers, mentors, and leaders in the field.

Continuing Education: The AGO encourages lifelong learning and offers continuing education opportunities for certified organists to keep their skills sharp and stay updated on music and liturgical trends.
