Trinity Sunday – “Benedicta sit”
Blessed be the Holy Trinity and its undivided Unity; we shall ever give him thanks, for he has dealt with us according
to his mercy. V: O Lord, our Governor, how admirable is your name in all the earth!
At St. Mary Magdalen chapel, we are using Missa VIII for the Mass Ordinary with Credo 3. The Asperges Me returns today as Vidi Aquam was sung for the last time in the church year last Sunday on Pentecost.
Listed today are the choral selections which our choir will sing for this Sunday’s liturgy – Trinity Sunday
- O God Almighty Father
- Gloria Tibi Trinitas
- Ubi Caritas
- Jesu Redemptor Omnium
- Palestrina: Bone Pastor
- Holy Father, Great Creator
Organ selections include:
- Pachelbel: Fugue in C P148
- JS Bach: Goldberg Variations (selections)
- Gigout Gregorian Album (22-23)
The Goldberg variations usually make it into my organ selections on Trinity Sunday. This work is comprised of remarkable mini “trinities”, each with character pieces, toccatas, and canons that form a unified spiritual musical expression underlying Bach’s religious devotion. Some musicologists argue that Bach architected the varations so as to embellish the aria with 30 variations as a deliberate attempt to express “the trinity times ten fingers.”
Recommended listening: JS Bach Goldberg Variations, played by Gunther Rost – available from the Azure Hills store on Amazon.
Choir direction by Andrew Petracca at St. Mary Magdelen Catholic Church, Camarillo, California. Traditional Latin Mass.
