Quinquagesima 2018

February 11, 2018 is Quinquagesima Sunday in the Latin calendar this year. It is also the Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time as celebrated in the Novus Ordo liturgy. Our introit today is Esto mihi in Deum protectorem.

Translation of the introit: Be thou my protector and house of refuge, that thou mayest make me safe: for thou art my strong rock and my castle: for thy name’s sake thou wilt be my guide and lead me. V. In thee, O Lord, have I trusted, let me never be confounded: in thy justice deliver me.

The Latin mass today will have a couple things missing from it. There will be no Gloria sung, and the use of the word “alleluia” is suspended until Easter. There will still be Propers sung, but the Alleluia before the Gospel is replaced by the Tract.

The Ecclesiasticae Cantiones of 1578 form the first important collection of sacred polyphonies by Ludovico Balbi, opening a composition career that ended with the Psalmi ad Vesperas canendi per annum, published in 1594.
