My Journey to AGO Certification
I entered the world of organists as a pianist who didn’t have any idea of the intricate world of the pipe organ. Probably similar to many church pianists, I found myself placed on the organ bench, was shown where a button was to sound the pedals on the lower half of a keyboard, and entered unfamiliar territory. Yes, being a new organist was quite uncomfortable. Mistakes were made. Learning moments abounded. I quickly discovered there was much I had to learn.
Somehow, I stumbled upon the American Guild of Organists and was thrilled to learn of the group’s educational resources, including the certification options.
The easiest I thought would be to pursue the Service Playing Certification so this became my entry point. Accessing the requirements for this certificate, I got myself special access to my local church where I was able to get quiet practice time one hour before choir rehearsals during the week and from 530 am to 630 am on Sunday mornings.
I was quite an accomplished pianist when I set upon this journey. I wanted to prove to myself that I could make the transition into the organ world.

I found the Service Playing Certification (SPC) a great entry point to church organ certification. Taking advantage of numerous AGO resources, I learned about registration, choral accompaniment, hymn playing techniques, and so much more.
Colleague of the American Guild of Organists (CAGO)
The Colleague certification is a step up, requiring a demonstration of intermediate-level organ playing and liturgical knowledge.
This exam consists of demonstrating keyboard skills, sight-reading, harmonization, transposition, and modulation. These are all important requirements for the successful church organist.
For my examination, I chose to pursue a dual certification in concert with the National Pastoral Musicians. I found this supplemental exam requirement to be the most challenging part of my CAGO certification.
Associate of the American Guild of Organists (AAGO)
Aimed at advanced organists, the associateship certification level tests a comprehensive set of skills including performance, improvisation, and theoretical knowledge.
Fellow of the American Guild of Organists (FAGO)
