Today is the Vigil of the Nativity 2017.  Whilst in most years, the Sunday following the 3rd Sunday of Advent would be celebrated as the fourth and final Sunday of the season, this year is different.  With Christmas Day falling on a Monday, the Sunday liturgy is that of the Vigil of the Nativity – so only three official Advent Sundays this year.

Today’s Introit is Hodie scietis

With the liturgy being that of the Christmas season, I’ll have a series of organ music with me today.

Planned organ selections today include the following:

  • Now the green blade riseth
  • Hail Mary (Lindusky)
  • Pachelbel: Magnificat IV.1

Listed today are the choral selections which our choir will sing for this Sunday’s liturgy – The Vigil of the Nativity 2017:

  • On Jordan’s Bank the Baptist’s Cry
  • Rorate Coeli
  • Adoramus Te Christe (Palestrina)
  • Jesu Redemptor Omnium
  • Ave Maria (Patracca)
  • Veni Veni Emmanuel

Recommended listening for the week is the phenomenal CD from the Hillier Ensemble, The Christmas Story.  If you have an SACD player, getting the SACD version and listening to this recording in high resolution is quite a treat.  The recording is performed by the Theatre of Voices, Ars Nova Copenhagen and directed by Paul Hillier.

“Hillier s Theatre of Voices operate at such a refined level of specialized technique that radically new expressive territory emerges. “–Gramophone
