February 4, 2018 is Sexagesima Sunday in the Latin calendar this year.  It is also the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time as celebrated in the Novus Ordo liturgy.  Our introit today is Exsurge quare obdormis Domine.

Translation of the introit: Arise, O Lord, why sleepest thou? Arise and do not reject us at the end. Why dost thou avert thy face, dost thou forget our tribulation? Our belly cleaveth to the ground. Arise, O Lord, help us and free us. V. O God, we have heard with our ears: our fathers have told us.
The Latin mass today will have a couple things missing from it. There will be no Gloria sung, and the use of the word “alleluia” is suspended until Easter.  There will still be Propers sung, but the Alleluia before the Gospel is replaced by the Tract. While Lent has not officially begun, the texts of the readings reflect penitence and the Priestly garments are violet. The choir does not need to begin singing Lenten hymns yet, but should obviously try to be consistent with the rest of the season and not use music that is too exciting or texts that contain “alleluia”.

Planned organ selections today include the following:

  • Couperin: Mass for the Parishes (1-5)
  • Pachelbel: Warum betrubst du dich, mein Herz

Listed today are the choral selections which our choir will sing for this Sunday’s liturgy:

  • Draw Nigh and Take The Body
  • Ave Maris Stella (chant)
  • Jesu Redemptor Omnium
  • Panis Angelicus (Casciolini)
  • Ave Vera Virginitas
  • Praise To The Lord The Almight

Recommended listening for the week is the CD Ecclesiasticae Cantiones.  The Ecclesiasticae Cantiones of 1578 form the first important collection of sacred polyphonies by Ludovico Balbi, opening a composition career that ended with the Psalmi ad Vesperas canendi per annum, published in 1594. The Ecclesiasticae Cantiones contain 21 motets for cantus, altus, tenor, and bassus on Proprium Missae texts, three for each of the four Advent Sundays and for the three Sundays in Septuagesima, in Sexuagesima, and in Quinquagesima. The recording is available here from the Azure Hills Music store on Amazon – click here.

Choir direction by Andrew Petracca at St. Mary Magdelen Catholic Church, Camarillo, California.   Traditional Latin Mass.
